Urkel
January 11th, 2010
Mrs. Felix’s fifth period class in the Carlisle Area School District of Carlisle, PA has requested one of the as yet unnamed bulls to be called Urkel. My first thought was to name the broken antlered bull because her class would be able to recognize him on the webcam. I had said I didn’t want to name them until I found some distinguishing feature that would allow me to identify him or her next year. So I took some photos and looked at him through the binoculars carefully and that’s when I realized he was Alfalfa.
I then turned my attention to the other bull about the same size who has both antlers in tact and tried to find some distinguishing feature.

When I take a close up of his right ear it looks like that tiny bit of blond hair near the tip might help ID him.

I don’t know who has more seniority, Alfalfa or Urkel. Alfalfa looks like he might have bigger antlers, but I saw Urkel shoo him away from a food bin once so it’s hard to tell.
Now having named him I would rather not be inundated with suggestions for other names. When and if I find a distinguishing mark on the other bulls or a cow I will open the comments up to suggestions, but only from classes. I know I have a bunch of schools from around the country that check my website.
You should be able to distinguish Urkel from the young bull whose antlers are barely higher than his ears. Sorry I don’t have a better photo of him.

Haha…just as well you said that about no more name requests because I was so close to asking for an Australian name for a new Moose! That just lovely to this for the school children. The new set of pics are sooo beauitful. A big thank you from me and my family.
I love the name Urkle, I think the kids did a good job picking it out. I find your site very interesting and check it out quite frequently. Thank you for making it possible.
Are you able to be outside when the moose are around?
Fifth period was more excited than you can imagine. I printed the pictures of Urkle, pasted them to bulletin board paper and put above them “Meet Urkle”. When they saw it they screamed. I wanted to take a picture of them with the pictures and send it but it is not possible on this comment page. If you’d like a picture e-mail me an alternate address to send it. IF you don’t want to I understand, you would start getting tons of requests and no doubted be inundated. Thank you so much for making my day as well as the students!
Excellent Name and an excellent way to handle naming other moose.
I so enjoy watching these magnificent creatures.
Thank you once again for this opportunity.
How much fun is that!! I just found this site within the last week, I have been so facinated just watching the moose. I saw Alfalfa just lying down yesterday. I am mesmerized. I have always loved moose (have no idea why as I grew up in suburbia in NY) I now live in Florida and there are no moose here either. They have such cute faces. Now I will have fun identifyig Urkle. Thanks so much for sharing these wonderful animals with us.
Super news and congratulations Mrs. Felix’s fifth period class in the Carlisle Area School District of Carlisle, PA (!)
“Whoa, Mama!” and “Did I do that?” *Urkel catchphrases*
Thanks again Pook!
Yes, my whole team of students (86 of them) are really excited.
Congrats Mrs. Felix and her 86 students for naming Urkle and for our host formally recognizing and acknowledging that!!! ha ha WOO HOOO :clap, clap:
URKEL it is! Debra can you tell us more about how the name was chosen by your class?
I am so thankful that the class is using Pook’s site for learning!
How we picked the name… It was just a one minute vote at the end of class one day. I had the website up for the last minutes of class and someone suggested we name a particular moose and watch it. We chose a name but never a moose. I don’t even think they expected me to e-mail the suggestion. We voted on two names and Urkel won. I think the other a common man’s name.
The pictures you took are wonderful. I love the fact that your site is being seen and used by school children. What a great way for them to learn about nature and wildlife. Thanks!!!
hi miss felx
thank you for the name of the moose
What was the other name of the two in the running for the vote(s)? Wonder who thought of Urkel someone in the class? Thank you for a great name
It really was exciting when I saw the picture of Urkel on the chalkboard! and the other name we were voting on was going to be Fred, but Urkel won!
Thank you so much for letting us pick a name. I’m a student from Carlisle area school district. But this was huge for our class. We have pictures of Urkle all over the six grade area. My class and I are always on moosewatch during class. (The teacher always brings the page up for us, so don’t think we sneak on.) Some of us get on at home too. I just wanted to thank you for naming Urkel for us!
